BNZ Head of Māori Business

Season 05 Event 01
Acting as the bridge between Māori and the corporate world, Pierre Tohe has been developing relationships with iwi across New Zealand since taking the newly formed Head of Māori Business position. Noticing a distinct lack of support within Māori communities and business, BNZ unveiled the now 30 person strong Māori Business Team in 2011. Since joining BNZ from national law firm Buddle Findlay in 2003, Pierre has been committed to connecting the dots of Maori needs and aspirations with the support and expertise in the corporate world.
"Ko te pakihi Māori, he mea tua atu i te pakihi"
"Māori business is about more than just business"
Since its creation, the BNZ Māori Business Team, has developed programmes and documents tailored directly towards Māori business for growth and financial literacy. These include cultural training for senior staff and launching BNZ's Māori Cadetship Programme. In addition, the Māori Business Team sponsors the two largest Māori Business awards in New Zealand - Ahuwhenua Māori Excellence in Farming Award, and the Aotearoa New Zealand Business Leaders Award. The team also provides funds to help iwi and hapu meet shortfalls in Treaty of Waitangi settlements.
Helping iwi with their finances benefits the whole country. Pierre states if iwi are successful in contributing to their economic success we will also see an increase in the health, well-being and education of Māori communities.
